McCarthy could have cut the book down considerably by just introducing the father and son and then let the father die. Two pages, max. The middle of the book becomes superfluous after you get to the end.
Although as far as the ending goes, it was much like No Country for Old Men. The Road just ended. Without even a bang or a whimper. I must admit that I was disappointed. I expected something.
I don't know - I thought it was pretty appropriate for the book overall. I'm not sure a 'good' ending would have felt right.
